From rivers and inlets to lakes and coastline, the opportunities for Florida fishing are limitless. Each area in the state boasts some great spots so the trick is to identify a place that suits your needs.
If you need a boat to reach your ideal spot but don’t have one, you can look at fishing charters. Popular shoreline spots like piers, bridges, jetties and other structures not only offer convenient access but some great action as well.
For example, Jacksonville Beach Pier offers a good chance to land king mackerel. For instance, the season for several species of grouper closes for certain months of the year.
Check out its seasonal fishing calendar that lists the best months to catch various species depending on the area of the state you’re in. If you want to head out to the deep sea, any charter captain will tell you there’s no bad time.
If you want to experience the thrill and excitement of offshore fishing or just head out in a small skiff in the grass flats but lack a boat, it can be a good idea to use a guide or book a charter. They’ll also provide you with rods, reels and tackle so you don’t have to bring your own gear.
DeSantis’ order to be Safer At Home and practice social distancing, there are several outdoor recreational activities that are approved, including fishing,” said Gary Jennings, Director, Keep FloridaFishing. “On behalf of Florida ’s more than four million anglers, we couldn’t agree more that now is the time to get outside and fish while practicing social distancing on the state’s beautiful waters.
DeSantis for including these activities and implore Floridians to please practice safe, social distancing in order to keep Florida fishing.” The American Sport fishing Association on Friday, March 27 sent letters to all 50 governors requesting they keep waterways open and available for people to fish.

“If you want to go on a 10-mile run by yourself and come back, more power to you,” DeSantis said at a news conference Thursday. In the governor’s view, that means taking common sense steps to reduce exposure to people who could be carrying the coronavirus by limiting trips outside the home.
You can walk your dog, ride your bike, go for a swim, fish or hunt, or any recreational activity as long as social distancing guidelines are followed. Taking care of a loved one or a friend is also considered an essential activity, as is attending religious services.
“There’s no reason why you can’t do a church service with people 10 feet apart,” DeSantis said Thursday. However, his decision drew this retort from U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel, D-West Palm Beach: “The coronavirus is just as dangerous and infectious whether you are in a community center or a church or synagogue.
In a call with religious leaders in her district on Thursday, Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinley urged them to broadcast their services online. But stay home if you’re sick, the state health department advises.
If you feel wary about stepping outside to get food, there are grocery delivery apps like Instacart. Just be sure to thank your delivery person, and in these hard times, it’s expected that you’ll leave them an adequate tip.
Healthcare providers -- hospitals, dentists, doctors, urgent care, clinics, rehabilitation facilities, physical therapists, mental health professionals, psychiatrists, therapists, pharmacies and more -- can continue to provide care to their patients. Gas stations, as well as supply and repair shops, and similar facilities, can remain open.
Businesses that provide propane or natural gas can also stay open. Businesses that offer food, shelter, social services and more to economically disadvantaged or vulnerable people can stay open.
Home-based care for children, adults and seniors; assisted living facilities; nursing homes; senior residential facilities; and adult day care centers can remain open, but of course senior facilities are closed to visitors under an earlier governor’s order. Childcare facilities also can stay open, as long as the children remain in groups of 10 or fewer.
Businesses that provide mailing and shipping services, as well as post office boxes, are open. Airlines, taxis and other private transportation providers can still operate (and of course, you can still drive).
Businesses that operate in airports, seaports or other government facilities can stay open. Contractors and other trades, like appliance repair, extermination and others that “are necessary to maintaining the safety, sanitation and essential operation of residences and other structures” are good to remain open.
Architectural, engineering and land surveying services can also stay open. Caution: Craft stores that help provide things to do at home with the kids, like Michael's, Joann Fabric and Hobby Lobby, are not considered essential and cannot stay open.
-Any business that deals with customers online or by phone, and delivers products by mail or delivery. -Local, state and federal governments, which means they’ll keep delivering mail, treating water and helping you flush your toilets.
“We are witnessing the, the largest single effort to expand hunting and fishing access in recent history. The St. Pete times report that over 34,000 cases of coronavirus has been confirmed in Florida.
Our great outdoors are not just for boys, girls, the young, the old, but for everyone. So I hear people saying that the stay at home orders do not include fishing because it is essential ”.
My instinct tells me that since our licenses are RECREATIONAL it does not make it ok to fish. However, if we were commercial fishermen it would be allowed as food is essential to the supply chain.
Granted our hunter instinct says we are providing for our families, so we think it’s what’s everyone’s opinion? Outdoor activities are fine, practice social distancing...
Tight lines and sharp hooks! On the bright side just imagine how much cleaner our oceans are going to be after this... less cargo ships, no more cruise ships, less overall boat traffic.
Just waiting for that first PB report that says they caught Albacore. Gavin Newsom issued a stay-at-home order for the state of California amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.
Here is a list of things you can do during California’s stay-at-home order. The list is divided by things you can do outside and online.
I have room for 4 and would love to offer to take guys out, but I can't justify the risk. I will be taking my own family out on our boat because we are all living in the same house.
Short period swell Saturday though Seems like Loretta bay is the only one open until everyone crowds it this weekend, and then it will be shutdown...
