The Group button is enabled for two or more selected objects. Press and hold CTRL while you select the shapes, pictures, or objects that you want to group.

Press and hold command while selecting the shapes, pictures, or other objects to group. If Group isn't visible on the ribbon, select Arrange to display it.

If the Group button is unavailable, verify that you have more than one object selected. It’s an easy way to create diagrams and charts in the word processor and manage them all easily.

Grouping multiple shapes allows you to apply the same formatting to them in one go, and it’s easier to move them without messing up their order. Open MS Word and insert a picture in the document.

Right now, when you try to select both the shape and the picture, it won’t work. Once you’ve changed the layout, you’ll find you can select both shapes and the picture.

This is why you need to first change the layout of the picture so that it can move freely once it is part of a larger group of items. You can group shapes, pictures, or other objects (but not text boxes).

Press and hold CTRL while you click the shapes, pictures, or other objects to group. You will need to select more than one shape, picture or object in order to enable the Group button.

Note: The Drawing Tools Format or Picture Tools Format tabs are contextual, which means that they only appear on the ribbon when you have a shape or a picture selected. Select any one of the shapes, pictures, or objects that were previously in a group.
