Grouper Jig Heads

When you know your favorite spot is holding them, but they are being finicky on baits, jigging can often be the ticket producing a reaction based strike that triggers their predatory instinct. Best places to jig for black, gag, red, and scamp grouper include hard bottom outcroppings, reefs, wrecks, oil rigs, and other structures that hold bait fish and provide hiding spots for ambushing their prey.

The Shaman Saragossa 8000 and 10000, Died Saltiest 5000, and Penn Slammer SLAIII6500 are all more than capable if you are just getting started. Black Hole Cape Cod Special 250g, Otis Fathom Blade 300g, and Shaman Arévalo 58XXH rods in both spinning and conventional models are all fantastic options that are super light weight with plenty of power and action to fool and whoop up on the best of them.

If you are using a buck tail, you can simply attach directly to the jig and avoid the rest of the terminal tackle. Otherwise, keep your jig at the bottom and reel in about 20-30’ towards the surface and then drop back down to stay in the strike zone longer.

Big buck tail deep jig tipped with squid or goggle eye . Followed by diamond jig ... then flat fall, bent hos/vortex. But a lot of this can be answered in depth by using the search button here.

Can’t beat a glow buck tail but I prefer to put Gulp on mine. Have caught well with Mr Twister tails in glow, as well.

Haven’t done much of it to confirm this is best but live bait would entice them as well. Glow, pink or purple my best producers.

The Biggest gag came on one tipped with a nice size live bait. All the fancy paint jobbed new creations can’t compete with good ole buck tail.

Pro type jigs in white work well but the hooks are a bit weak. A very old timer once said to use just a round white jig head with a hook embedded, no tinsel, Mylar or furry skirt.

My experience is that it works as good or better than a Carolina rig here in north Go, especially in the Big Bend area. Also had luck with the Lucas style jigs.

I use them for a sinker when fishing dropper rigs and catch fish on them especially when something is spanning on the dropper rig. I have jigged Grouper, As, AJ and even big Triggers on these.

We would sometimes insert a skinny bait fish inside the body of a squid and hook the head of the fish wearing the squid coat. I lost two big fish due to someone else's knots but my 12/0 electorate may have been overkill.

I have been wanting to drop a live bait straight down while drifting with no weight. Mark your bottom depth somehow on your line (and I haunt figure out this yet) maybe a rock or something you can quickly release (rubber band) and hold that meal just off the bottom, darting around.

Mark the distance off bottom with a rubber band to keep the bomber above it. Proper hook placement also helps encourage them to go down.

Free shipping Sold: 5 Jigging is one of the most active fishing methods, requiring you to snap or pop the rod tip up quickly to move the lure vertically in the water column.

Reel down a little to keep the line tight in case of a strike and repeat. Jig comes in all shapes, colors, styles and weights and can be fished in a variety of different manners so that they mimic bait fish.

Depending on the species you want to catch, it’s important to learn the difference between the two so you can understand, for example, the best jig for bass fishing. A buck tail jig will typically consist of a lead head, that can be a variety of different shapes and sizes, which is molded onto a hook and has hair-like material tied to the bottom of the jig head.

A vertical jig, or speed jig, is made of a long and slender piece of lead or metal that cuts through the water mimicking an injured bait fish. Deeper water will require heavier jigs to reach the bottom.

It is also important to take the tides and current into consideration when choosing your jig weight. Plus, with the full moon we have larger tides and more water moving around creating more action and more feeding opportunities.

These wading birds on the flats are a great sign that there will be some predatory fish ready to eat your lure or live baits. The shook, trout and redfish are all feeding better later in the day after the sun gets a chance to warm up the local waters a little to get them more active and ready to cooperate.

They are loving smaller live pinkish, cut bait or slower moving soft plastic lures. Keep an eye out for schools of mullet around the seawalls, oyster bars or grass flats often a few nice redfish will follow these guys around.

Like the redfish and shook you have to remember to slow your retrieve a little since the local waters are cooler. The best place to find them is definitely the more sandy bottomed areas adjacent to grass flats or any structure that will hold bait or crustaceans like docks, seawalls, bridges or jetties.

Sleepyhead are biting very well this time of year too like the trout the cooler waters make them super prolific and aggressive around the structures like docks, bridges, piers, jetties and anything that will hold oysters, barnacles or crustaceans. Triple tail are super thick right now around the bay and along the beaches around the markers, buoys and floating debris.

I like using a knocker rig style set up for the dogfish with a 1oz egg sinker and a 3-4ot hook with a live shrimp for bait. Any of these three methods will give you a shot at a nice dogfish near shore this time of year.

While to our north and around the mouth of Tampa Bay the gag grouper seem to be biting and cooperating best. They love the clearer waters and areas that are holding live baits like bigger rock piles or artificial reefs.

Right now the gags are on the ledges, and we are seeing more of the red grouper on the potholes and flat hard bottom areas. The big mangrove snapper are cooperating very well offshore right now on the smaller live pinkish or the cut thread fin plugs on the double Snell rigs.

WIN FREE FISHING TRIPS at our next Bass Pro Shops seminar event coming up Saturday, December 21st at 2pm! Hope you can join us for another great fishing conversation and event at the Tampa Bass Pro Shops located on Palm River road in Tampa/Brandon area.

The mullet are flushing out of the back bays slowly and that’s causing our local dolphins to group up into large groups to feed on these unsuspecting fish as they swim into the passes to stage up for their near shore spawn. Plus, when these large groups get together typically they tend to really show off to each other and work together to school up these fish.

Lots of Juvenile birds have become young adults, and they are still goofy and uncoordinated so its fun to cruise by the island and watch their antics as they play together and learn their socialization skills. We have a good number of bald eagles returning to the area from up north to stay warm for the winter.

Great time to spot lots of these majestic large birds of prey while on the water with us at Hubbard’s Marina! Great time to join us for one of our sunset cruises at Hubbard’s Marian because the weather is making some outstanding colorful views for the lucky visitors and locals who join us for our daily sunset cruise that offers FREE beer and wine every night around 7pm.

We offer these trips Friday through Monday until the end of November from the boat ramp at Fort De Soto County Park, and they run at 10am, noon and 2pm and the final return time is 4pm! We have officially called and emailed all the guests who were active members this year to see if they are ready to renew.

If you are an active member and have not renewed, there is no big rush but it helps a lot to get resigned up for next year sooner than later. Give me a call or email, and we can talk about the clubs and get you signed up ASAP.
