As I said many times, the taskbar is one of my favorite things in Windows 10. When you pin a lot of things and there are apps running actively, the taskbar becomes crowded very quickly.

Put simple, the taskbar is hugely helpful in day to day life and it is far a more involved process to customize and manage taskbar icons. To makes things a bit tidier, you can group similar icons together on the taskbar.

Press the Windows Key + I keyboard shortcut to open the Settings. Select Always, hide labels option from the Combine taskbar buttons dropdown menu.

As soon as you select the “Always, hide labels” option, Windows will group all the similar icons into stacks on the taskbar. You can easily select the window you want from the taskbar thumbnail preview.

User's post on May 1, 2016, Now if I could just sort the groups separately, I'd be even happier. If I do a sort now, all the icons return to the left side of the desktop.

Press Windows key + R, type reedit and press Enter. Locate the Word NoSaveSettings in the right pane in either of the below locations.

Delete the Word and restart your computer. This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry.

However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully.

For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. User's post on May 5, 2016, I'm happy enough just to group my icons on the desktop and if necessary move them around manually rather than trying to sort the groups separately with a sort command.

I didn't follow what deleting Reword would accomplish, but don't feel confident enough in my knowledge to start fooling around with reedit. Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site.

Hello: When I first upgraded to Windows 10, I started playing around with the taskbar. I found a way to manually “group” the icons I had previously pinned.

As I recall, all I had to do was drag and drop icons on top of each other. I've searched for a solution, but the closest I've found is info on some sort of auto-grouping.

If you don't refer to custom toolbars (pointing to folders where you add shortcuts) you add to main taskbar I don't see what you mean .... For me it was a nice way to organize the taskbar, particularly since I had/have lots of icons on it.

I do remember having to do SOMETHING to enable it; maybe it was installing a 3rd P app. I place the icons I want in the group into the folder.

Then I right-click on the new toolbar and tell it not to show a title or text. I adjust the position and size (taskbar must not be set to locked to do this), and once all are where I want them, I lock the taskbar to hide the adjustment handles.

To add another icon, you can right-click a portion where there's no icon, select Open Folder, then add another shortcut there. You'd have to readjust the size if you want all the icons to show.

My taskbar is 2 lines high, and set to auto hide. For some unknown reason-as usual, when I opened Windows 10, my taskbar was blank.

I was in luck as his method was the perfect answer as I already had my taskbar groupings in file explorer; so, it was a simple matter to just follow his placement instructions. One of the benefits I noted was that the icons within the groups were “packed” closer together than if I had dragged shortcuts from file explorer and manually arranged them into groups.

Due to the “packing,” I now have 39 app and system icons in 6 groups and a nice sized space in the middle of the taskbar that shows minimized apps...all in one taskbar. Our Windows desktop is often our go-to location to put files and folders, especially if we want quick and convenient access.

In this article, we will show you how to get your Windows desktop organized so that it’s clutter-free, efficient, and convenient. Windows has some built-in features for organizing files and folders, which might just be what you need.

For a more robust solution, there are some third-party packages which you can use to group desktop icons into specific categories. You could add any number of folders to the desktop for alternative shortcut categories such as applications, utilities, multimedia software, and so on.

If you have a lot of files on your desktop, getting them organized can be difficult, especially if they start overlapping. One feature you might want to have is the ability to see inside folders without having to open them, just to remind you what's in there.

It is a portable software package that you can use to add folder groups to the desktop. Open this page and click “Download Mimi Places” and save the executable.

Then click on the .exe file and select “Extract Mimi Places” to launch the software. Mimi Places launches with four ready-made container groups for Applications, Games, Documents, and Downloads.

You can copy and paste desktop shortcuts into those boxes by right-clicking an icon and selecting “Copy.” Then right-click inside one of the container boxes and click “Paste” to add the copied shortcut to it. To add your own group containers to the desktop, click the Mimi Places icon in the system tray.

Then click Place, and select one of your desktop shortcut folders. That will add the folder container to the desktop, and you can open the shortcuts it includes from there.

Then, select the Rename container option, which opens the text box below. When you’ve extracted the Zip file’s contents, you can run Toolbox from there.

To further customize those desktop icon boxes, right-click one and select Toolbox Properties from the contextual menu. To resize the icon boxes, drag the bars under Window & Tile Size.

Drag the Rows bar to expand or contract the height of the box. Alternatively, you can drag the Columns bar right or left to alter the width.

You can right-click a box and select Toolbar Control Panel to open the window shown below. In addition, you can also set up boxes that include system tray shortcuts.

The Toolbar Control Panel includes a Wizards' menu at the top. Select that to open a small menu where you can set up a system folder, drive, and mega pack shortcut box.

With Windows 10 folders, Mimi Places, and Toolbox, you can now effectively group your desktop icons and organize shortcuts. Grouper simplifies access management by letting you use the same group or role in many places in your organization.

Grouper is used in the Uncommon Trusted Access Platform architecture to manage attribute/role-based authorization services and group memberships in an auditable way based on institutional data from systems of record. You can set up groups, roles, and permissions for many purposes, such as populating and administering standing committees, ad hoc research teams, departments, or classes.

Gives you a single point of control Once a person is added or removed from a group, the group-related privileges are automatically updated in all of your collaborative applications. Grouper enables efficient management of the membership roster at a single point.
