We started our catching some baits just off the beaches and then after a quick run turned them into a couple nice Barracuda. After a couple quick pictures the Grouper was safely released and raced back to the bottom.

After that I went to a patch of hard bottom, and we quickly pulled up a bunch of nice Snappers for a couple tasty meals. Captain Camille has over 18 years of experience fishing the waters of Sarasota Bay, as well as the surround...

This enormous goliathgrouper is by far one of the largest specimens that Josh has ever landed. He caught this grouper using a custom-made handling.

Earlier in the week, we caught one at least 100lbs larger than this with Team Infinity Fishing. Choose from thousands of fishing products from name brand fishing tackle and gear manufacturers in the Angler HQ Tackle Shop.

Told Captain Chris what we wanted to do (catch some fish for the freezer and some to test our muscles), he listened and made it happen. Unfortunately for us, Gag Groupers and Red Snappers were out of season, or we would have limited out in a hurry.

There were plenty of big Mangroves and Grunts for the table and groupers, Red Snappers (huge) and Amber jacks to test our muscles. Chris was a true pro with great equipment and plenty of good advice that I will use in the future.

When I first called you I said I wanted to catch some Grouper and you delivered big time, plus all the other fish you put us on. What was really cool was when Brian told you he wanted to catch a Hog fish, you changed his rig told him what to do and next thing we know he is bringing in a Hog fish, great eating.

Getting Steve to hand line pull in the GoliathGrouper is a fish story of a lifetime. Post a photo Ask fellow travelers and attraction managers your top questions.

Species HabitatBlack grouper are found in the western Atlantic Ocean with ranges extending from Massachusetts to Brazil. They are particularly associated with the southern Gulf of Mexico, Florida Keys, Cuba, the Bahamas, and throughout the Caribbean.

Juveniles can occur in seagrass and oyster rubble habitat in the Carolina's, and along reefs in the Florida Keys and in Brazil. Adults prefer rocky bottoms, drop-off walls and ledges, caves, crevices, and coral and artificial reefs.

While they are relatively sedentary and can remain in one particular site for some time, black grouper move to progressively deeper waters as they age. They used passive acoustic recorders to monitor sound production indicative of spawning habitat use by groupers at Riley’s Hump in the Tortuga's South Ecological Reserve in Florida, the first known US spawning site for black grouper.

This study illustrated the importance of the Tortuga's South Ecological Reserve and called for continued research in order to understand its role in the recovery and sustainability of managed fish populations. Because of the vulnerability to overfishing associated with large aggregations and the biodiversity therein, it is important to consider spawning locations in the establishment of marine protected areas and seasonal closures.

The plan and its amendments include numerous measures to rebuild current populations. Limiting the number of available permits (both transferable and nontransferable) available to commercial fishers; Establishing annual catch limits for both commercial and recreational fishers; Establishing overall species quotas; Commercial and recreational size limits to reduce harvest of immature grouper ; Seasonal closures to protect spawning aggregations; Gear restrictions to protect habitat and reduce by catch; and, Eight deep-water marine protected areas closed to fishing and possession of snapper and grouper.

Established in 1984, the Reef Fish FMP and its amendments were designed to end historic overfishing for shallow water groupers and to rebuild populations. Establishes and allocates annual species-specific catch limits between commercial and recreational fishers for groupers and tile fish; Sets gear restrictions; Sets minimum size restrictions to protect immature grouper ; and, Establishes year round and seasonal area closures for both commercial and recreational fishers to protect spawning stock and essential fish habitat.

The If program allocates shares of the total commercial catch limit amongst individual fishers. Under the program, each fisher owns a share of the quota and can choose to fish it at anytime during the open season.

Strict commercial reporting requirements prevent fishers from harvesting more than their individual allocation. Red and black grouper are among the most important species caught in Mexico in terms of volume and economic value.

Most grouper, particularly those caught in the Mexican industrial bottom longline fishery, is imported to the US. Numerous entities are involved to some degree with creating, implementing, and enforcing fishery management strategies in Mexico.

Under SAGA RPA, the National Aquaculture and Fishing Commission (Coalesce) is charged with developing and carrying out fisheries management regulations. Wild Black grouper are found in the Atlantic from Massachusetts to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico.

Grouper in generally are fairly long-lived and come together to spawn in large numbers, characteristics that make them vulnerable to fishing pressure. A May 2014 Seafood Watch report stated that according to the most recent stock assessment in 2010, black grouper is not considered overfished.

Grouper fisheries have high impacts on nontarget species, the Monterey Bay Aquarium reported. The black grouper fisheries use hooking devices and circle hooks to reduce by catch.

Venting tools are also employed to make it easier for reef fish to survive when released. Management measures include permits, annual catch limits, fishing quotas, marine protected areas that are closed to fishing, seasonal closures, gear restrictions, minimum size limits, and data reporting requirements.

Will turn into a very fun drinking game in this thread rosewood wait until after work and driving to read / take part in this? Anyway I don't have a lot of time right now as I have to get the kids ready to go, but I wanted to at least get this one going because I basically derailed a thread about another topic because of this topic, and a Moderator asked us to stay on topic which I agree keeps things from getting convoluted (I used to Moderate forums, so I know the pain it can be to keep people on track) so, without further explanation, I'm curious to hear what anyone likes or doesn't like about their Rods, or Rods they have used, regardless of species they were targeting.

They're sensitive enough to detect these bite of a 1over but can handle anything in freshwater, and they aren't too shabby in salt water. I've never felt under gunned and often times reel in fish that are 50-60lbs, and they feel like 20lbers.

Ok, I am off work tomorrow, temp is 20×F right now so no night fishing for walleye cause the line would freeze solid to the reel, and I got my six-pack. A lot of party boat charters used solid glass blanks as their house/rental rods because even gewgaws can not break them.

But, they are just too heavy and lack the sensitivity to make anything short of a big shark fun to catch. But, I can see where there is a time and place where those solid glass rods fill a niche.

The difference is the shear diameter of the gator blank compared to just about anything else. When you compare the tip diameter to those other three rods, none of which are push overs, you get a real idea of how serious this gator blank is.

I have not even attempted to build on the blank yet, it is just far beyond anything I want or need unless I moved to Florida. If you want overkill that gator blank truly take the cake.

The Whisker Seeker rods, Obama Records, and St. Croix Mojo Cats are all right in the middle. The biggest thing that makes high modulus graphite rods seem brittle is that they can't take banging around or being over flexed (think anything thing over a 90 degree bend using the tip and butt as measure points) very well.

It creates micro fractures that provide a weak point for the rod to fail during what seems like normal use. That's the primary reason you see those high dollar rods on the bass tournaments blow up on hook sets.

Properly protected from any undo banging around, high mod graphite is insanely strong. With glass, you pretty much do away from the micro fractures, especially in solid glass rods. My personal want for solid glass is for bushwhacking into new spots on a river.

The Penn Squall 60 Lever Drag, and the Penn Fathom 60 Lever Drag are like two Reels on my wish list that I can't wait to “stress test” with my Big Cat Fever Rods. Oh, I get to say Rods now instead of Rod, because last week I got an Email from Catch The Fever saying they had a new Limited Edition that they were making 500 of, and last year I didn't get any of the Limited Edition, and this year, they look AMAZING! The Color Scheme on the new Big Cat Fever Medium Heavy Conventional Limited Edition Rod is the Orange and Black similar to a Whisker Seeker Rod, but without that stupid 20% Graphite added in to the S-Glass which is why I went with Big Cat Fever.

Well that and I don't particularly care for Graphite with steel plating for a Reel Seat either LOL. Pure S-Glass, no composite..... Ugh if only they had an HQ here in Michigan.... Actually it's probably better they don't, LOL, I'd be there like every chance I had begging for a job.

Over a foot of Snow is currently covering the fairly good walk / trail that I take to my Carp spot, and before my new Winter Boots came in yesterday I was still using my Trail / Hiking boots so it was getting a little rough trying to go off in the woods that the backyard leads to. What kind of Beer is that? I mean I'm German and Irish so it's not like I'm super Picky, I'm just curious what it is because I don't think I've seen that kind before.

Man I might actually go for one of those things if I get to Salt water fish a bit cause those would be AWESOME! I'd be Walleye Fishing too if I was capable of walking outside without screaming LOL.

:ROFLMAO:But, when it is cold enough to cause water to freeze your gear solid and make fishing a pain in the butt I am out. I had some experiences lately with different rods that were not casting well and the reel was back lashing at the end of the flight despite my efforts.

Just to add to this part here ^ I also do this, but I also do this based on what the Current is going to be like in the area as well; I don't exactly go fishing for bait with 900 pound Mono and a Shaman Tiara 130 LOL, but if I need to cast REAL lead, which, here in Michigan..... Bro the lakes.... I was Whipping' for Walleye, and we couldn't hit bottom with 3 ounces and that was a slow day.... I've also cats out 5 ounces of lead, and not had that even hit bottom in a tributary of the Great Lakes / St Clair / Detroit River System.

My general cat and carp gear has 50# braid on it and I neck it down with mono or four leaders to an appropriate pound test. My carp rods are from Europe, and they are 10, 12 and 13 foot.... I can sling a 3 ounce method feeder a long ways with those without trying too hard....

My cat rods are all over the spectrum....from medium to triple extra heavy LOL yeah, I think everyone feels that way, but some of my best spots for Catfish, and Carp, are spots where in Spring Time, once the Water is starting to warm up a little, you have to take a Machete with you into the woods, because the trails out in my area only go to one decent spot, so, we make our own. One of my favorite Angling Moments to date, was like a year and a half ago when I got my first actually MINE Fishing Gear since from before I was even a teen...

I used to fish a lot because everyone in my family considers it stupid to pay for ALL the Protein you eat (Apparently Vegan is ancient Germanic for bad angler) but in my family, EVERYONE learns how to kill and eat something, and my Uncles never took me out in the woods hunting, but we ALL went Fishing. I brought the ONE Rod and Reel combo I had, and she brought her own gear, and we had a landing net and some knives / a machete (We do have Coyotes here amongst the other woodland creatures) and we walked WAY out in the woods, found the spot we were looking for, and sat down.

The Reel was gone and wouldn't even bring in line any more (I had to hand line my gear back to the river bank because of that, wasn't the most fun) so I sat there for a second, and told my Girl what was going on, and because it was one of those Spin Cast Reels, I figured it was basically done for anyway, those things aren't exactly known for being high quality LOL. Even though dragging a HEAVY Rod and Reel, and a 15 pound Carp UP HILL while the mud and water are knocking me down and I'm trying to drag a bleeding fish that didn't make it, so I decided to keep it, along with me LOL.

Ah here we are, I mentioned something about this up that way ^ I can land a big fish on light gear...but I need to put the bait in his face to do that and if that requires 6, 10, 16 ounces of weight....my rod and line is going to be adjusted accordingly If you ever watch Catfish and Carp on YouTube, Luke has TWO videos about breaking an Ugly Stick GX2, and at one point he decided to cast a Milk Jug full of Water.

But, when it is cold enough to cause water to freeze your gear solid and make fishing a pain in the butt I am out. LOL just yesterday I was informed by my Fiancé that we are going Ice Fishing for my very first time this year; A friend of ours and her Boyfriend love fishing too, and we haven't been able to go with them yet, and with the Weather in Michigan continuing it's downward Spiral like a cold Nine-Inch Nails album.... Yeah, might as well try it out for the first time. My soon-to-be Father in Law gave me my first Ice Rod last year and I haven't used it, but I also do have my Dock Demon, which, I'm willing to bet will work just fine, as it's solid Z-Glass and has a Cork handle, which, it should hold up LOL.

Wow you talk along like Luke from catfish and carp but you do realize he is an attorney and has money falling out of his pockets I type a lot, but unless Catfish is a topic, I'm not really that talkative all the time.
