Long before the state had oceanfront resorts and amusement parks, fish camps in Florida attracted visitors from all over the globe... Most came in search of large mouth bass, but a few of the more adventurous souls fished for tarpon and other saltwater species in small, isolated coastal communities such as Coca Grande.

This fish camp has all the amenities of a modern resort, but it's the spirit and charm of the classic fish camp that help make Florida ’s largest lake an international angling destination. Back in the 1800s, paddle-wheeled steamers regularly carried sportsmen far up the St. John’s River in search of big bass.

You can still catch the world-famous Florida bucket mouth and other species at the Bass World Lodge, south of Georgetown on the St. John’s River. This fish camp offers easy access to Lake George, Rodman Reservoir and the Oklahoma River.

Whatever your pleasure, chasing billfish in blue water, flooding the grass flats or busting big bass, Florida has a fish camp for you. Florida and other states use license revenues to enhance recreational fishing opportunities and sustain fisheries resources.

This makes them great places to get away for a few days or weeks and experience natural Florida. Even if you don't fish, you can chill out, rent boats and explore the area on the water or on the back roads in a true Old Florida getaway.

Florida was first settled along its Atlantic and Gulf coasts, and not long after the settlers began to arrive and set up communities on the state's many rivers and lakes. Rooms at fish camps are usually quite a bit cheaper than their fancier counterparts among the chain motels and hotels on the busier highways.

If you choose a fish camp without lodging, they are still great places for day trips to launch your own boat or rent one of theirs. Waterfront property in Florida is ever-increasing in value and this puts the pressure on fish camps.
