Florida Fishing Bag Limits

Special bag and length limits apply to some lakes, rivers (this page) and Fish Management Areas. No person shall kill or possess any Suwanee, shoal, spotted, or Choctaw bass that is less than 12 inches in total length.

The recreational bag limit for American eels is 25 per angler per day. No person shall have in his possession more than two days’ bag limit of freshwater game fish (see Rule 68A-23.005 for details).

No native freshwater fish or their eggs may be taken or possessed except as permitted by these rules nor shall anyone wantonly or willfully waste the same. It is illegal to possess grass carp or alligator gar without a permit; these fish must be released immediately.

Triploid grass carp are used for aquatic vegetation control and may not be stocked or harvested without a permit. Due to their limited numbers, harvest is restricted to individuals with a valid scientific collector’s permit.

No person shall take, possess or sell any sturgeon or parts thereof, or their nests or eggs, except as allowed by specific federal or state permit or authorization. People who inadvertently catch one must immediately release it alive back to the water.

5 Black bass (including large mouth, Suwanee, spotted, Choctaw and shoal bass, individually or in total), only one of which may be 16 inches or longer in total length. No person shall kill or possess any Suwanee, shoal, spotted, or Choctaw bass that is less than 12 inches in total length.

In the Suwanee River, areas north and west of the Suwanee River, and in any tributary, creek or stream of the Suwanee River: the bag limit for striped bass is 3, each of which must be at least 18 inches in total length (20 fish combined bag limit)(See map). 2 Butterfly peacock bass, only one of which may be 17 inches or longer in total length.

The recreational bag limit for American eels is 25 per angler per day. Recreational anglers purchasing American eel as bait may possess more than the legal bag limit provided that the eels were purchased from a licensed dealer.

No person shall have in his possession more than two days’ bag limit of freshwater game fish (see Rule 68A-23.005 for details). Exceptions are fish legally acquired from agriculturists (fish farmers) for use in Aquarian, for brood stock, pond stocking, or properly marked for the market.

Lake Alcuin, Leon and Gadsden counties (including that portion of the Ochlockonee River lying between Lake Alcuin and the railroad trestle that is located immediately below U.S. Highway 90, that portion of the Little River lying between Lake Alcuin and County Road 268, that portion of the Rocky Comfort Creek lying between Lake Alcuin and County Road 65-B, and that portion of Bear Creek lying between Lake Alcuin and Bear Creek Road, those portions of Ocklawaha and Hammock creeks lying between Lake Alcuin and State Road 267, those portions of Blunt’s, Freeman , and Harvey and Polk creeks lying between Lake Alcuin and State Road 20): Crappie less than 10 inches in total length must be released immediately. Wildcat Lake, Marion County (Ocala National Forest): Black bass must be released immediately.

St. Johns River Water Management Area (Farm 13, including the Stick Marsh), Indian River and Brevard counties: Black bass must be released immediately. Knight Tract, Indian River County (locally known as Evansville Lake): Black bass must be released immediately.

Lake Okeechobee: Crappie (speckled perch) less than 10 inches in total length must be released immediately. Lake Jackson (Walton County): 5 black bass (all of which must be 12 inches or greater in total length, only one of which may be longer than 22 inches in total length); 15 striped bass, white bass and sunshine bass (only 5 of which may be 22 inches or longer in total length); 30 crappie (speckled perch); 50 pan fish (does not include crappie, possession limit is 50 fish total, regardless of species).

1 (1) The open season for fishing shall be from July 1 until June 30 of the following year, except as otherwise provided by these rules. 46 (3) No person shall have in his possession more than two days’ bag limit of freshwater game fish.

In any water body where there are specific regulations as to bag limits, minimum length, maximum length, or protected length limits for any species, which are different from the general regulations, the specific regulations supersede the general provisions of this rule section. 106 (4) Bag or length limits for lakes designated as Fish Management Areas shall be as specified in Rules 124 68A-20.004 125 and 126 68A-20.005, 127 F.A.C.

154 (6) State-wide bag limits : Except as otherwise provided in these rules, no person shall take in any one day more than the following: 177 (a) Five (5) black bass, of which only one may be 16 inches or longer in total length.

209 (d) Two (2) butterfly peacock bass, only one (1) of which can be greater than 17 inches total length. No person shall kill or possess any speckled peacock bass.

238 (e) 239 American Eels must be nine inches or greater in total length for recreational and commercial harvest. The recreational bag limit for American Eels is twenty-five (25) per angler per day.

Recreational anglers purchasing American eel as bait may possess more than the legal bag limit provided that the eels were purchased from a licensed dealer. The burden shall be upon the person claiming the benefit of this exemption to show, by receipts, bills of sale, or other appropriate documentation, that such fish were purchased from a licensed wholesale or retail dealer.

No person shall kill or possess any crappie less than ten inches (10'') in total length. 957 (9) Anglers participating in the TrophyCatch Program in compliance with TrophyCatch Program rules and fish handling guidelines may temporarily possess in live condition one Hall of Fame candidate large mouth bass (13 pounds or greater) over the legal length limit and bag limit until the fish is certified by FCC staff or authorized representative.

Except as provided elsewhere in this rule, no recreational harvester shall harvest within or without Florida waters, nor possess within or without Florida waters, more than a total of 10 snapper per day, in any combination of species. Except as provided elsewhere in this rule, no recreational harvester shall harvest in or from state waters, nor possess while in or on state waters, more than 5 gray (mangrove) snapper per day.

Except as provided elsewhere in this chapter, no recreational harvester shall harvest in or from state waters of the Atlantic Ocean, nor possess while in or on state waters of the Atlantic Ocean, more than 2 red snapper per day, nor shall a recreational harvester harvest in or from state waters of the Gulf of Mexico, nor possess while in or on state waters of the Gulf of Mexico, more than 2 red snapper per day. On any vessel licensed to carry customers wherein a fee is paid, either directly or indirectly, for the purpose of taking or attempting to take marine fish in the Gulf of Mexico, the applicable bag and possession limit specified in this rule shall not extend to the operator of such vessel or any person employed as a crewman of such vessel.

Such bag and possession limit shall be counted for purposes of the aggregate snapper bag and possession limit prescribed in paragraph (a), only if harvested in or from state waters. Except as provided elsewhere in this rule, no recreational harvester shall harvest in or from state waters of the Atlantic Ocean, nor possess while in or on state waters of the Atlantic Ocean, more than 5 vermilion snapper per day (consistent with the Federal Standard established in 32450 C.F.R.

No recreational harvester shall harvest in or from state waters of the Gulf of Mexico, nor possess while in or on state waters of the Gulf of Mexico, more than 10 vermilion snapper per day. Lane snapper harvested in state waters of the Gulf of Mexico shall not be subject to nor counted for purposes of determining compliance with the bag and possession limits established in paragraph (a).

Cuber snapper of a total length less than thirty inches (30'') shall be included in the aggregate snapper bag and possession limit established in paragraph (a), and the exception provided in subsection (9). Except as provided elsewhere in this rule, in all state waters of the Atlantic Ocean and all state waters of Monroe County, within the aggregate bag and possession limit established in paragraph (a), no more than 1 fish may be a gag or a black grouper.

Except as provided elsewhere in this rule, in all state waters of the Gulf of Mexico, except in all waters of Monroe County, within the aggregate bag and possession limit established in paragraph (a), no more than 2 fish may be gag grouper. Except as provided elsewhere in this rule, in all state waters of the Gulf of Mexico, except in all waters of Monroe County, within the aggregate bag and possession limit established in paragraph889(2)890(a), no more than 2 fish may be red grouper (consistent with the Federal Standard established in 90750 C.F.R.

Such fish shall be counted for purposes of the aggregate grouper bag and possession limit prescribed in paragraph (a). No recreational harvester shall harvest in or from state waters of the Atlantic Ocean, nor possess while in or on state waters of the Atlantic Ocean, more than one snowy grouper per day.

Such fish shall be counted for purposes of the aggregate grouper bag and possession limit prescribed in paragraph (a). 1175(a) In the Atlantic Ocean and south of 25°09' North Latitude in the Gulf of Mexico, no recreational harvester shall harvest in or from state waters, nor possess while in or on state waters, more than 1 dogfish per day (1216consistent with the Federal Standard established in 122350 C.F.R.

1231(b) In the Gulf of Mexico north of 25°09' North Latitude, no recreational harvester shall harvest in or from state waters, nor possess while in or on state waters, more than 5 dogfish per day (1267consistent with the Federal Standard established in 127450 C.F.R. Except as provided elsewhere in this rule, no recreational harvester shall harvest in or from state waters of the Atlantic Ocean, nor possess while in or on state waters of the Atlantic Ocean, more than 7 black sea bass per day (consistent with the Federal Standards established in 133550 C.F.R.

Except as allowed for those persons harvesting for commercial purposes pursuant to Rule 141368B-14.0045, 1414F. A.C. No person shall harvest from state waters, more than an aggregate bag limit of 5 banded rudder fish and lesser amber jack per day either individually or in combination, nor possess more than 5 such fish while in, on, or above the waters of the state or on any dock, pier, bridge, beach or any fishing site adjacent to such waters.

No recreational harvester shall harvest in or from state waters of the Atlantic Ocean nor possess in or on the state waters of the Atlantic Ocean more than one golden tile fish per person per day. Such fish shall be counted for purposes of the aggregate grouper bag and possession limit prescribed in paragraph (2)(a).

1588(a) Except as provided elsewhere in this rule, no recreational harvester shall harvest in or from state waters of the Gulf of Mexico nor possess in or on the state waters of the Gulf of Mexico more than one gray trigger fish at any time (consistent with the Federal Standard established in 163950 C.F.R. 1647(b) Except as provided elsewhere in this rule, no recreational harvester shall harvest in or from state waters of the Atlantic Ocean nor possess in or on the state waters of the Atlantic Ocean more than 10 gray trigger fish at any time.

1757(b) Any person harvesting pursuant to the bag limits of this rule, with the exclusion of red porgy harvested from the Atlantic Ocean, who has fished aboard a charter vessel or head boat on a trip that spans more than 24 hours may possess and land double the bag limit if the vessel has a sleeping berth for each passenger aboard the vessel and each such passenger possess a receipt issued on behalf of the vessel that verifies the length of the trip. Except as provided in paragraph (2)(d), the possession limits of this rule do not apply to any licensed seafood dealer, or to any fish purchased from a licensed wholesale or retail seafood dealer.

The burden shall be upon the person claiming the benefit of this exemption to show, by receipts, bills of sale, or other appropriate documentation, that such fish were purchased from a licensed wholesale or retail seafood dealer. Failure to maintain such receipts, bills of sale, or other appropriate documentation shall constitute a violation of this rule.
