The Goliath grouper (Epimetheus Tamara) is one of the largest and most intimidating looking creatures swimming around in the Eastern and Western Atlantic Ocean today. These critically endangered bunkers range throughout the Florida Keys, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean where they use their large mouths to swallow up sea turtles, barracuda, snappers, sharks and whatever else they can fit in their mouths.

Today, he's teaming up with some other popular YouTubers, Dude Perfect, to see if they have what it takes to battle these monsters. In typical fashion, Blackish seems to take a lot of joy in watching these anglers in the battle of their lives.

No matter how many times we watch Josh take people out on his boat to do this, we are always amazed at the large size of these giant ocean predators. Goliath's have a slow growth rate, but once they reach a certain size, there is nothing in the ocean that can touch them.

It's awesome that the ecosystems and fisheries for this species are being preserved and that more and more people are venturing out into the Eastern Atlantic Ocean to see these fish and experience their raw power for themselves. Before you make fun of these guys for struggling with these fish, just know that Josh has had some of the best pro athletes and body builders in the world in the boat with him after Goliath before.

Especially because the Jacksonville Jaguars right tackle is 6-feet-5, 325 pounds -- and his previous personal record was a 20-pound red snapper. The Atlantic Goliath grouper he had on his line on July 2 while fishing with Blackish Fishing off the coast of Jupiter, Florida, was significantly bigger than that.

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Japan Taylor, who weighs 325 pounds, caught a fish that was even bigger than him this off season: a 400-pound Atlantic Goliath grouper. Courtesy Blackish Fishing “Oh, man, it was crazy,” Taylor said.

Josh Jorgensen, the host of Blackish ’s saltwater fishing show on YouTube, said the wreck was loaded with huge Goliath grouper and a 400-pounder is pretty common. When the pole started bending back behind the boat, you have to use your weight to push down on the back of the boat and curl the pole up the same time.

Those numbers, plus the mountain of texts and direct messages he got, caught Taylor off guard. I got a lot of crazy DMs, all type of things like that, tweets, people talking about the fish.

The deadly encounter was captured on film by one of the group and shows the ferocious attack in graphic detail. As the Goliath swims toward the boat, the shark launches its attack, by plunging its razor sharp teeth into the rear end of the unfortunate fish.

In the ensuing tussle, the grouper ’s large gills flail wide open to audible gasps from the watching fishermen. The waves splash, as the struggle intensifies and the shark bites deeper into the Goliath’s flesh.

They can grow to enormous sizes, often reaching lengths of 2.5 m (8.2 ft) and can weigh as much as 360 kg (790 lb). A favorite dish of food connoisseurs, they were over-hunted by fishermen to the point where their population numbers went into a steep decline.

The fish is now entirely protected from harvest and is recognized as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The Goliath groupers are called the garbage disposals of the sea, because they have a propensity to eat everything in sight.

Oh my gosh!” Jorgensen exclaims, before cracking up with laughter as the monster fish disappears as suddenly as it had popped to the surface. Goliath grouper, which can grow to 800 pounds, are considered “off limits” for fishing, according to the Miami Herald.

In 2018, Florida wildlife commissioners “refused to lift a nearly two-decade ban on harvesting the fish, citing continued uncertainty about the remaining numbers and bowing to the demands of divers and scientists, who packed a meeting and led an online petition that drew nearly 60,000 signatures,” the Herald reported. Wilson Chandler, forward for the Denver Nuggets, caught a humongous fish on a recent outing in Jupiter, Florida. I knew he was a monster before I could even see it,” Chandler told CBS Sports.

Blackish and Chandler shared stunning images of the catch online. The population of the fish species in southern Florida has been rebounding after it dwindled to unknown lows.

At one point, it earned protected status as an endangered species, the magazine said. Chandler, 29, missed last season because of an injury, but the NBA player is cleared to return to training next month, CBS Sports said.
