An Old Florida icon located right on the Intracoastal Waterway next to the historical Blackburn Point Swing Bridge, Casey Key Fish House serves lunch and dinner at its restaurant and wiki bar. Popular menu items include the Grouper Key Largo (seared grouper, shrimp, sea scallops, lobster meat, mushrooms, citrus before Blanc), Walnut Crusted Salmon (teriyaki glaze, ginger aioli) and, from the “Classic Steaks” corner of the menu, the filet Mignon with Gunther Gebel-Williams’ steak sauce, a recipe from the legendary Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus lion tamer who was a longtime Venice resident.

Located right off Tamiami Trail on Dona Bay, Kokomo’s Sunset Hut provided two floors of open-air seating in a tropical wiki setting. For entrées, check out the Land & Sea Luau featuring barbecue-style pulled chicken or pulled pork on a bed of seasoned yellow Spanish rice, Saxon black beans, sautéed sweet onions, sautéed green, red and yellow and orange peppers, and “island sauce” surrounded by tortilla chips.

The newest destination in the locally owned Evil’s group of restaurants and bars, The Point places guests on Little Sarasota Bay with multiple dining areas. Featuring a mix of Florida and New England seafood favorites, the lunch menu includes a grouper sandwich, a North Atlantic lobster roll plus standards such as a signature burger, herb-grilled chicken sandwich and salads.

Among the dinner entrées, there's fish and chips, jumbo lump crabs, seared sea scallops, lobster mac-n-cheese, and a New York strip for steak lovers. Hugging the Intracoastal Waterway across from Rooms Beach and Casey Key, Pop’s Sunset Grill has a rich history dating back to the 1940s with the current owners running the place since 2001.

Reportedly discovered by smugglers during Prohibition, it then became a location for the 1930s Hollywood films “Prestige” and “Tarzan’s Revenge” before opening to the public as a fishing camp with a restaurant in 1988. Another favorite is the Shook Platter with pulled pork, beef brisket and ribs, homemade potato chips, collard greens, and Texas toast.

COVID-19 Alert: Hours and menu options may be affected due to the COVID-19 coronavirus. Please contact the restaurant directly for updated info.

The Gulf is warm, the sand is sugary soft, the Land Kai is jumping. But venture just a little away from the masses, check out some of my favorite Fort Myers Beach restaurants, and I can promise some great food to go with your good time.

That line ends with flaky, from-scratch biscuits layered with chewy-crisp bacon, fried eggs and melty cheese. It ends with gooey cinnamon rolls made from that same fluffy biscuit dough.

It ends in a quaintly colorful cottage with creaky floors and fresh juices and even biscuit-based burgers (great for hangovers (or, so I hear)). In the Venn diagram of “great food” and “sunset views,” the overlap is thin.

Like tear into that massive pork tenderloin sandwich, or peel another Gulf pink shrimp and dunk it into butter. This place also makes excellent steamed-bagel sandwiches loaded with fresh sprouts or classic lox.

It sells jars of local mango jam and pours stiff cappuccinos crowned with light froth. But those waffles (speckled with pearl sugar, just like in Liege) are Tuck away's masterpiece, great as a beginning or an end.

I have a tendency to rave (and rightly so) about Doc Ford's younger-sister restaurant, Dixie Fish Co. Named for one of novelist Randy Wayne White's most beloved characters, this local chain nails it.

From the local seafood, to the simple, tropical preparations, to the mojitos muddled with cane sugar and fresh lime. On the quieter end of Fort Myers Beach, the one where dolphins may still outnumber spring breakers, there is Flipper's.

Bonus point for the full bar and stunning views of Estero Bay. Jean Le Bonus is the pseudonym used by a local food lover who dines at restaurants anonymously and without warning, with meals paid for by The News-Press.

Add in the fact that fish is healthy, low in calories, and chock-full of vitamins and all things good for you, well it’s the perfect entrée! It’s also great for a quick weeknight dinner with your family and perfect for a casual cookout with friends.

Then liberally oil the grill grate using tongs holding a folded paper towel that has been soaked in vegetable oil to ensure your fish doesn’t stick. Make the salsa : add the mango, red and green bell pepper, jalapeño, crushed pineapple and juice, garlic, shallots, lemon or lime juice, and parsley to a large bowl.

The salsa can also be made 24-48 hours ahead of time to allow the flavors to develop. When your grill and fish grate are hot, add the fillets and close the lid.

Before you turn the fillets over, brush the top side again with the melted butter. To check to see if the grouper is done: take a fork and gently pull back a section in the center.

If the fish is opaque with just a bit of translucent center, it’s ready to come off. The goal is to pull the fish off right before it finishes cooking and then let it rest loosely covered with aluminum foil for about 10 minutes.

To serve: place a fillet on a plate and spoon the mango salsa over the top. Grouper is a member of the sea bass family and is a lean, moist fish with a characteristic sweet, mild flavor that is not at all “fishy.” When cooked, it has large white flakes and a firm texture.

If you can’t find grouper where you live, you can substitute another firm, mild white fish such as red snapper, scamp, halibut, or sea bass. The fillets should also have a sweet sea breeze aroma and no fishy smell.

When buying fillets, I usually plan for four to eight ounces per person, depending on the number of sides I intend to serve and the level of appetite of those eating. If you purchase frozen fillets, allow them to thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

If you forget to do this, you can thaw quickly by letting them sit under cold running water. To check to see if the grouper is done, take a fork and gently pull back a section in the center.
