The majority of the bass are still on pre-dawn grass edges gorging themselves to get ready for the winter and their time to spawn. Flipping a classic ribbon tail worm or a Seiko into the grass, reeds, or pads of these pre-spawn area’s is deadly at this time of year.

In my experience the fish at this time of year prefer a slow fall and subtle action. You’re essentially flipping but covering more water and your bait is more subtly falling as apposed to the little splash caused from pitching every cast.

Flukes flat out catch fish in Florida throughout the year, and they work now too. I always try to switch up my cadence with every cast between fast jerks and slower pops until I get a bite to find out what the fish want that day.

Work it slowly with short pulls and pauses around pre-spawn areas and even over spawning flats, and if it’s a top-water type day for the fish you can get some awesome explosions on this bait ! Throw this thing out around Lily pads, grass lines, or reeds in pre-dawn or spawning flats, and just let it sink to the bottom.

Give the rod a little lift to feel if something has it in there mouth and if not then Texas rigged weightless Seiko just reel back up and repeat. Little fish all the way to the biggest bass in the lake have been caught on these basic straight worms.

If the water is dark or murky the darker colors are the way to go, and if it is clean and clear use green pumpkin. A weightless Seiko has probably caught more bass around the world than anything else and it works just the same here around the spawn.

Collectively, they used just about every bait you’ll ever need if you want to catch a bass this time of year in the Sunshine State. On days one and two, Tommy Dickerson flipped a Reaction Innovations Kinky Beaver (black and blue) with 80-pound-test braid and a 3/4-ounce weight around small pads up shallow.

The rest of the tournament, he fished a Lake Toho she'll bed that was surrounded by drill with a Pro Ark Shad 75 in gold with black back. In Too, Joseph Webster started most days by throwing a gold and black Excalibur One Knocker for schooling fish around the mouth of a boat lane.

He then ran to Kissimmee and fished drill, eel grass and pads with a Juneau Zoom Ultra vibe Speed Worm with a 3/16-ounce weight and a 5/0 superfine EWG hook. At the Toyota Series Championship last week, nearly every pro in the field had a craw-colored crank bait on the deck, with a few very notable exceptions.

In the late fall on Lake Cumberland, small mouth can be pretty easy targets for anglers willing to cover a lot of water up shallow on the rocky, boulder-strewn shorelines that comprise most of the highland reservoir in Southern Kentucky. In the Toyota Series Championship last week, that meant beating the banks with a variety of reaction baits.

Still, a few anglers attempted to mix in large mouths to varying degrees, and even for spots, it wasn’t all spinning rods. Fall can be a tough time to fish most places in the country, and for the final Toyota Series Plains Division event of the season on Table Rock Lake, that certainly was the case.

A cold front passed through the week prior, bringing cool rain that lowered water temperatures and raised the lake. Though the final Toyota Series Plains Division event of the season on Table Rock wasn’t the usual fall bite you may expect to see in the Ozarks, the top 10 pros stuck to their strengths and employed everything from ice fishing jigs to top waters to catch their fish.

Topped-out, matted grass and dropping water temperatures were the fall backdrop to the Toyota Series Southern Division event held on Lake Seminole. With that, it’s no surprise punching baits and shad imitators were the most common lures seen on the top pros’ front decks throughout the event.

The top finishers in the recent Toyota Series Southwestern Division event on Sam Rayburn caught the lake when the shallow bite was just picking up. Sticking shallow around drill with a wake bait, Aaron Johnson stayed consistent and won the event.

Behind Johnson, there was a lot of room for pros to fish to their strengths, though there’s no doubt that shallow eventually won out. Five straight years of Lake of the Ozarks hosting a Toyota Series Plains Division event in October usually takes the guesswork out of what to expect.

Cold fronts, rainfall, rapidly cooling water and turnover can shake things up and make getting a bite much harder than normal. But, on the final day, when folks could branch out, Scott Dobson actually ran to St. Clair and many of the other pros ventured into Lake Erie.

Some top 10 pros chose a power approach to cover vast stretches of grass, while others slowed down with some finesse tactics that always seem to play on the Potomac. For that, pros relied on five primary tools: Chatterbots, Speed Worms, Senior, jerk baits and lidless crank baits.

The Ontario pro started the tournament in Lake Griffin with a prop bait, vibrating jig and Zoom UV Speed Worm, but that pattern didn’t last long. The champ caught most of his keepers on a jerk bait and a gold lidless crank bait in Lake Harris just a couple of minutes from takeoff.

Other than a lone keeper that he caught on a prop bait the last day, John Hunter spent his tournament fishing offshore drill in Little Harris with a 6th Sense Provoke jerk bait in a solid shad pattern during low-light conditions and a translucent Mega bass Vision 110 in the afternoons when the sun got high. Flipping a Copperfield-colored Gambler Ugly Otter on a 1/2-ounce Texas rig in Lake Apopka earned a top-10 finish for Glenn Browne, who caught spawning fish that he couldn’t see well enough to sight-fish.

His go-to baits were a Profound Outdoors Alma Shaker Z Mime lidless crank bait (chrome), a Texas-rigged Zoom Magnum Trick Worm (Juneau) and a Z-Man Chatterbot (white). Kurt Dove relied on an IMA Flit 120 jerk bait in chartreuse shad at his shallower offshore grass areas in Harris.

Former Forrest Wood Cup champ Anthony Gaillard fished offshore grass right next to Dove using a Carolina-rigged Black Flag Grande Worm. At the Toyota Series Championship last week, nearly every pro in the field had a craw-colored crank bait on the deck, with a few very notable exceptions.

The beginning of the fall transition coupled with dirty water from end to end created difficult fishing conditions at the Toyota Series Plains Division opener at Lake Dardanelles presented by Fish-Intel, but anglers focused their attention to the backs of creeks and used a variety of baits to solve the riddle. Some top 10 pros chose a power approach to cover vast stretches of grass, while others slowed down with some finesse tactics that always seem to play on the Potomac.

The beginning of September helped mark the start of the fall transition in the south and that is exactly what the field faced in the Toyota Series Southwestern Division event on Fort Gibson. From top waters to soft plastics, the top 10 utilized a large chunk of Fort Gibson to catch their fish, with the Grand River paying the biggest role in the division’s second stop of the season.
