The PantherGrouper can get to be about 27 inches (70 cm) when fully grown, and they eat like it's going out of style. To adequately keep them you should be thinking about a 300 plus gallon aquarium (1135 liters).

The juvenile groupers around 3 or 4 inches are collected on the reef and sold to stores, but they can quickly outgrow most tanks. The larger groupers are a food fish and sold in Asian markets.

They will eat most meaty type fish foods such as silver sides, crustaceans, squid, etc. So lots of cover (live rock) will be needed to help make them feel secure.

As they grow they will become bolder but for the most part will leave other similarly sized fish alone, including other Panther Groupers. Breeding : Fish base reports a spawning event in 1979 but the eggs died.

Taxonomy: available through www.itis.govIdentification: Commonly misspelled as Completes. The genus Chromites contains only one species, the panther grouper Chromileptesaltivelis.

Molecular taxonomists have recently subsumed Chromites into Epimetheus (Ma and Craig 2018); however, this designation has not yet been widely applied. The head profile is unique amongst the groupers, as it is depressed anteriorly and elevated posteriorly, rising sharply at the nape.

Pectoral and caudal fins rounded. Dorsal fin X (17-19), anal fin III (9-10), pectoral rays 17-18 (Heemskerk and Randall 1993; Randall et al. 1996).

Similar species: Greater soap fish (Optics saponaceus) has gray to dark body color, lacks dark body spots. Spotted soap fish (R. subifrenatus) has tan to brown body color and pale borders around dark spots.

Native Range: From the Red Sea to South Africa and east to French Polynesia and the Pitcairn Islands group, including northern Australia, Lord Howe Island and southern Japan. Early reports (from Valentines in 1828 and Quo & Gamma rd in 1824) listed the species from Hawaii’i; however, these reports are considered erroneous.

Reports from western Indian Ocean (Heemskerk and Randall 1984, 1986) are unsubstantiated, except one from Kenya (Smith 1954) which seems valid (Heemskerk and Randall 1993). Non indigenous Occurrences : In Florida, the species has been collected/observed in Tampa Bay (in 1984 ), off Boca Raton (pre-1995 ), in the Indian River Lagoon, near Cocoa (in 2003), off Pompano Beach (in 2005 and 2006 ) and off West Palm Beach (in 2007 and 2011).

A very large specimen (68 cm TL, approximately 15 lbs) was captured off Key Largo in December 2012. Scattered records from Hawaii are probably based on released aquarium fishes and the species was considered extirpated as of 2005 (Randall and Heemskerk 1991; Muddy 2005).

Research from Australia indicates that panther grouper can live to at least 19 years in the wild. The species is an important food-fish throughout the Indolent Pacific region; however, due to its carnivorous nature, it has been blamed for numerous cases of Ciguatera poisoning in both the native and introduced ranges.

Impact of Introduction: The impacts of this species are currently unknown, as no studies have been done to determine how it has affected ecosystems in the invaded range. The absence of data does not equate to lack of effects.

It does, however, mean that research is required to evaluate effects before conclusions can be made. Reef fish identification: tropical Pacific.

The humpback grouper is a medium-sized fish which grows up to 70 cm (28 in). Its particular body shape makes this grouper quite impossible to mix up with other fishes.

This stocky and strange visual effect is accented by its concave profile and its elongated snout which gives it a humpbacked appearance. The young have a white background with round black spots and are continuously swimming head down.

It is widely distributed throughout the tropical waters of the central Indolent Pacific region. > The humpback grouper lives in clear waters from lagoons and seaward reefs with a preference for dead or silty areas.

The diet of this grouper is based on small fishes and crustaceans. Like the members of its family, the humpback grouper is reversal, solitary (except during mating periods), defends a territory, and is an ambush predator.

Its feeding activity is maximal at sunrise and/or at sunset. This species is a protogynous hermaphrodite ; in other words, all individuals are born female, with the ability to transform to males as they grow older.

The humpback grouper has been give Data Deficient status by the IUCN. It is a highly valued food fish, especially in Southeast Asia and in this region it is over exploited.

It is bred in aquaculture but there is no evidence that captive breeding has reduced the fishing pressure on wild populations. Australia has put strong conservation measures in place for this species(no take species in Queensland and possession limits in other states, e.g. Western Australia) but it is lacking protection elsewhere.

They thrive best in tanks with a good filtration system to cycle waste as well as plenty of live rock hiding places. If you think those pics are “horrible” then the phones gallery would give you nightmares for sure my soft core pampered friend And people don't send dogs to the animal shelter because they want them to be happier or have more room to live the best life they send them there because they don't want to take care of them.

Like getting a dog and thinking it can always go to the animal shelter if it gets too big. In the wild fish rarely live in the same cave all their life.

So if you are good fish keeper, if you do your research and have resources to rehome, there is nothing wrong with it. They are a dime a dozen and people treat them as disposable.

Hopefully the next person researching the panther will find that it is a rare thing they find someone keeping a panther long term, huge tanks not withstanding. In the wild fish rarely live in the same cave all their life.

I like what you wrote however I've read that a Panther grouper has a life span of about “20 years “ I buy fish because I like to have them around me and enjoy their beauty and care for them, and they make me happy to see living things prospering and living happily under my care and I'm sure I'm far from the only one.

I'm on a forum interacting with other fish keepers to share perspectives and knowledge but sadly the majority of members here aren't here to enlighten but more so to criticize, nay say, and point and wag their fingers at other fish keepers/ hobbyists. Panther groupers are supposed to taste delicious although it's not very sporting to catch it out of a tank vs the ocean.
